What to Pack for a Nepal MTB Expedition

Packing for a Nepal MTB expedition is a genuine challenge. You need full riding kit plus trekking clothes plus altitude gear plus spare parts — and it all needs to fit on a mule for the remote sections. Here’s what we’ve learned.

The Non-Negotiables

Full-face helmet (or at minimum a trail helmet with MIPS). Knee pads. Gloves — two pairs. Chamois cream — you will need more than you think. A good hydration pack with at least 2L capacity. Tubeless repair kit. Multi-tool. A lightweight down jacket for camp.

Bikes and Bike Kit

We have a rental fleet of well-maintained trail bikes available. If you’re bringing your own bike, a 140–160mm travel trail or enduro bike is ideal. Bring extra brake pads (Shimano and SRAM are available in Kathmandu but don’t rely on it). Bring a spare derailleur hanger for your specific bike model.

What You Can Buy in Kathmandu

Thamel in Kathmandu has excellent gear shops. You can find North Face, Mammut, and good quality no-name alternatives at reasonable prices. Buff/neck gaiters, base layers, trekking poles, and sleeping bag liners are all readily available. Don’t bring these from home unless you need the specific technical spec.

The Single Most Important Item

A good attitude and flexibility. The mountains will do what the mountains do. Passes close, weather changes, plans shift. The riders who have the best experiences in Nepal are the ones who embrace this rather than fighting it.
