If you ask a seasoned Nepal guide what their favourite trek is, there’s a good chance they’ll say Langtang. Not Annapurna, not Everest — Langtang. Here’s why.
The valley is just 65km north of Kathmandu. You can be in thick Himalayan wilderness in five hours from the capital. The approach through Tamang villages is culturally rich and visually stunning. And at the top of the valley, Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870m offers direct views of Langtang Lirung (7,234m) that rival anything in Nepal.
The trek was severely damaged by the 2015 earthquake but has been rebuilt — and the recovery effort has created a community of trekking infrastructure that is among the best-maintained in Nepal. The local community deserves your visit.
From Kyanjin, the options are excellent: hike to Tsergo Ri (4,984m) for sweeping views, explore the nearby glaciers, or simply acclimatise and rest in one of the excellent teahouses. There is no pressure to rush, no crowds, and — for now — no roads above Syabrubesi.
